4 Simple Steps to a Home Office That Works as Hard as You Do

Home Office wooden desk with a chair, laptop and lamp

It’s officially 2022 and most of us have been working from home for almost 2 years now. Because that shift to working from home came so suddenly, it’s likely contributed to some disorganization in our collective home office spaces. Let’s start the year fresh with an organized space! Here’s how…

Tip #1 – Start by Sorting Everything

A cluttered desk equals chaos. You can’t find what you’re looking for when you need it most! Start by taking everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) off your desk and onto a large surface like the floor or your dining room table. By doing this, you can clearly see everything.

From here, you’ll want to sort things by category and take a moment to untangle any rogue electronics cords.

Tip #2 – Specify What to Save, Shred the Rest

Now that things are sorted, take a few minutes to decide what to keep and what to get rid of. Once you decide what to keep, it’s important to then figure out how to keep your items organized. It can be as simple as setting up organizers for incoming and outgoing mail, a rack for file folders, etc. Also, don’t forget to organize your tech! A docking station can keep all your gadgets contained to one location with cords neatly tucked away.

Tip #3 – Scan in Order to Simplify

It is truly a freeing feeling to get stacks and stacks of paper off your desk and have them stored digitally. No more ruffling through paper piles to find what you want! I love using DropBox as my digital storage solution. I scan any documents and have folders created for each of my clients. If I need to refer back to notes from a consultation or measurements for a space, I know exactly where to go!

Tip #4 – Schedule Time to Save Sanity

Now that everything is streamlined and organized, you might think the hardest part is over, right? Not so fast. The hardest part is maintaining this newfound organization. Luckily, maintaining isn’t as hard as it sounds. If you take 20-30 minutes at the end of your workday on Fridays to tidy up your office both physically and digitally, it will set you up for a productive week when you start back up on Monday.

Do you love working from home, but hate your home office? Set up a design coffee chat to get started! I would love to help you declutter and destress!

Cheers,
