Kids Room Design
An inspiring, individualized space for a real teenager to grow in and enjoy
Kids Room Design
This room has truly grown and pivoted alongside our family. When we first moved into our home, this room was my office. When my dad moved in with us, he took it over as his room. And finally, as we wrapped up a proper in-law apartment for my father, my son, Cameron claimed the room as his own.
Prior to this dedicated space as a kids room designed just for him, Cameron’s bedroom was an area in our finished basement (which doubled as the den). The den didn’t have a door, so privacy was an issue and his bedroom was far away from the main living space upstairs.
I faced the challenge of condensing Cameron’s living quarters to a space that was one-third of what he was used to in the basement (moving from 300+ sq. ft. to about 100 sq. ft in his new space).
Little boys eventually grow into teenagers, so I had to be sure I was designing this kids room with the eventual transition to teenage Cameron in mind. We wanted a space that was timeless and would grow with him. He loves reading, drawing, building with LEGOs and playing video games, so I ensured that all of these activities he loved were able to be enjoyed in his new room.
I also created distinct zones within the room so it would provide space and storage and allow him to access whatever he needed, without it being in the way. We brought in a small desk in front of his window so he’d have space to draw and dream without it taking up valuable floor space in the small room.
Cameron loves his room so much now he barely leaves it! Designing a kid’s room with their individual preferences and needs in mind, helps them live and grow healthier and better every day.
