Coastal Bedroom Design

A calming, peaceful space reminiscent of a coastal getaway

Coastal Bedroom Design

It can be tricky being your own client, as it was with my primary bedroom. After purchasing our home in October 2017, I was excited to create a bedroom that was an oasis from the outside world. With the challenges of raising a family and dealing with migraines, I knew having a peaceful, calming bedroom was important for my own well-being.

The problem was that I didn’t quite know which design direction I wanted to take. Then, I started thinking about places outside my home that I enjoy traveling to. One of those places for me is the ocean. There’s something about gazing off at the waves and the clear blue sky on a warm, sunny day that immediately centers me.

With that question answered, I knew that a coastal bedroom design was the direction I wanted to go in. I focused on a color palette of neutrals with blue. With a monochromatic color palette, it can look a little drab, so I wanted to bring in different patterns, textures and shades of blue.

For patterns, there’s a paisley pattern in the back pillows and comforter, two different patterns in the throw pillows, and a pattern within the runner on the dresser. For texture, there’s different textures woven into the throw pillows in the front of the pillow arrangement on the bed. I also added a woven bamboo basket to store throw pillows and extra blankets when needed.

To achieve the different shades of blue, there’s a pale blue on the walls, a medium blue in the damask pillows in the back, and both a light and a dark denim blue woven into the pillows.

Finally, I wanted to add a few coastal elements without it going nautical overboard. I did this with the compass hanging over the bed and the driftwood candle holder on the dresser.

I love my bedroom! It’s a cozy spot to rest and relax – not just for my husband and I, but for my Chief Doggie Officer, too!
