3 Easy Steps for Creating the Ultimate Outdoor Living Space

With summer right around the corner and school being out for a few months, it’s important to take a step back and enjoy a quieter pace of life. What better way to do that than with a beautiful, tranquil outdoor living space! Here are my 3 steps on creating an outdoor oasis the whole family can enjoy!

1. Plan your outdoor living space first.

Before you start shopping for new furniture and décor, take a few minutes to think about how you’d ideally use your outdoor space. Is it to drink your morning cup o’ joe to start your day? Is it to host family gatherings in the warmer weather? Is it to work al fresco? However you choose to utilize your space, the important thing is to let your imagination run wild. If there’s any place to inject some fun and out-of-the-box ideas, it’s your outdoor space!

2. Layer from the ground up.

When thinking about designing an outdoor living space, the process isn’t drastically different from a space indoors. I approach each space (both indoor and outdoor) by layering it from the ground up. Take for example, my own outdoor space. First, I started with a rug. I knew the rug would dictate my color palette, but also provide some much needed protection from the heat since composite decking can get to over 100 degrees under the hot sun!

Then I space planned for furniture. Our deck is not that big, so we couldn’t have a lot of furniture on it. We decided on a smaller sectional sofa for the whole family (fur baby included) to sit on and an egg chair for an additional seat to use when working outside.

From there, I selected fabrics and added my finishing touches through accessories. My family and I also added a Solo Stove for nights when it’s a little chillier or if it’s a good evening for roasting marshmallows and making s’mores. Links to some of the items I selected are below. 3. Choose the right materials.

The one main difference between indoor and outdoor furniture is that outdoor furniture needs to hold up to the elements. Because of this, it’s important to invest in pieces that are well-made with fabrics that are built to last. One of my favorite fabrics to use in outdoor applications is Sunbrella. Not only does it stand up to rain and muddy feet/paw prints, but it withstands fading from the sun. Sunbrella is available at many major retailers, so it’s easily accessible for most families. Other great options are polyolefin and high UV polyester.

What’s next?

Remember that your outdoor living space is an extension of you and your home. It’s important to have fun adding both beauty and functionality into your new family-friendly outdoor oasis.
